New agreement between WGU and Indiana’s Ivy Tech Community College provides credit transferability, reduced tuition, and application fee waiver

Salt Lake City — Completing a bachelor’s degree just became more affordable for graduates of Indiana’s Ivy Tech Community College, thanks to a new agreement with Western Governors University, www.wgu.edu. Under the terms of the agreement, Ivy Tech graduates who have completed their associate degrees are eligible for an application fee waiver, a 5 percent discount on WGU’s already-affordable tuition, and a generous transfer policy. In addition, the online, competency-based university is earmarking ten scholarships valued at up to $2,000 each for qualified Ivy Tech grads.

The Face of Success: Jack Elston PDF Print E-mail

Greetings All:

Now that 2009 has ended, I can finally turn the page on a difficult year (jobless for 8 months) and look forward to the future.  I just want provide you with an update on how I'm doing, to share a few “truths” about job seeking, and to offer my sincere thanks to you. I landed my new job in August at Pinnacle of Indiana, a Microsoft Software/IT/ERP VAR of 60 people, just 5 miles from our home!  My connection to Pinnacle came via a former Bible study friend who is one of the 2 owners (both came from my old firm, Crowe Horwath).  The need for my position was cultivated by their Ops Manager, a long time (15+yrs) friend from Granger Community Church.  And it occurred shortly after they hired a new friend (Eric Huggins) who I had met via Michiana Career Network Association.  So, the # 1 Job Seeking Truth is... “It’s mostly about Relationships”.

My role as a Strategic Business Developer is to further integrate a group of 14 very sharp software developers with an energetic sales team to help businesses realize the benefits of: Workplace Collaboration, Document Imaging/Management, Business Intelligence, Web Strategy and Social Media.  Indeed, my years at Crowe and The Associates as an IS consultant/auditor, CPA, applications analyst/trainer, and product/group executive are all directly applicable.  Truth # 2 – “Recognize your Transferable Skills”.

Although Pinnacle is much smaller (60 people vs. 2,500 at Crowe), and with fewer support resources, it is reminiscent of my early days at Crowe (when there were only 70).  Pinnacle is very flat, family friendly, nimble and extremely excited to grow.  Truth # 3 – “Small Business is where the growth opportunities lie”, especially following a recession!

Finally, here’s my real message:  Although joblessness at age 56 really sucked, I was also showered by so many blessings this past year:1)    The many folks who provided valuable advice/feedback, networking contacts, job consideration or just consolation (lunches, coffees, or phone calls).  Thanks – I really appreciated your time and care!2)    The love and encouragement of my wife, Yolanda, my family and many close friends – who loved and encouraged me, and spent time with me doing "fun things" to remind me that life is not just “all about your job”. 3)    The many new friends I made through MCNA and other job seeking groups (most who were also unemployed, but others who were there simply to help) – thanks for sharing your education, experience and encouragement.4)    God’s faithfulness.  Try as we may to run our lives, we don’t always get what we expect.  God, however, always has a plan for us – we just have to be willing to let it unfold.

So, regardless of your own situation - employed or jobless; healthy or ill; content or faced with family/financial problems - Count your blessings and stay faithful. He will be. Happy New Year!

PS to my MCNA Friends - I have sen (via Facebook) that a number of you have finally "landed" as well - Congrats!! Let me know where. To those who haven't - keep the following "formula" you are learning at MCNA, keep attending your groups and encouraging others who are new, and keep up your faith. Your journey will end!

JACK ELSTON

MCNA needs a Managing Editor

If you want to learn and build your skills in managing people, communications and content through the Joomla web content management system (CMS), myMCNA.com offers a great opportunity. We need a volunteer editor to be trained to manage and build this site for the Michiana Career Network Association.

Joomla powers literally millions of web sites worldwide, including sites like MTV, Citibank, and Harvard University. Modern CMS skills are quickly displacing simpler systems and demand for basic webdesign / FrontPage skills is diminishing rapidly. Here's a chance to up your game and help others at the same time.

Contact the leader at your MCNA member organization for more information.

LinkedIn for complicated resumes

user

Creating a LinkedIn profile is pretty straightforward when you have a job with a well-defined title. But I’ve been getting questions lately about how to create a profile on LinkedIn when what you're doing isn’t so tidy. Two scenarios that come up a lot are how to create one of these profiles if you have a slash career (e.g. yoga instructor/caterer), or if you’re unemployed (or, as some say, consulting).

There’s some overlap between the two scenarios because in both cases you are taking what feels like a standard tool and tailoring it to fit your needs. And the good news is that when you spend a little time with it, LinkedIn allows for a lot of customizing.

Here are a few ideas:

Play with your status updates. If you’re looking for opportunities, mention that in your status update so that your connections are reminded of it. The example above, which says "on the prowl for career and/or entrepreneurial endeavors," is a good model.

The 7 Must Read SlideShare Presentations for Job Seekers
These seven presentations are handpicked by the Applicant Blog at applicant.com. They also got some love from from getthatjobonline.com

1. Effective Job Interviewing from Both Sides of the Desk
It is gives great advice by looking at both sides of the job interview. My favorite tidbit is, "Your Awesomeness is not self-evident."

2. 10 Job Search Attitudes that Will Get You More Interviews
Short, but sweet. I think attitude is often an overlooked piece in the job hunt puzzle. My favorite tidbit is, "I will search as if I don't need a job."

Michiana…Right Here, Right Now

Michiana has received a lot of national attention recently, and rightly
so. We face a lot of challenges, to be sure, but there is also hope and
excitement in the air. It can be overwhelming at times, and confusing
on how to proceed. That’s why the MHRA has assembled a blue-chip
panel of experts from the national, state and local levels to address
the issues, challenges and opportunities that face businesses in
Michiana…right here, right now.
• U.S. Congressman Mark Souder
• Indiana State Senator John Broden
• Wil Cashen, CEO of Electric Motors Corporation
• Eric H.J. Stahlhut, Partner at Barnes & Thornburg, LLP
Date: September 18, 2009
Time: Registration and breakfast at 7:30 am.
Symposium begins at 8:30 am and concludes at 11:30 am.
Place: RVMH Hall of Fame, CR17 at Toll Road exit 96, Elkhart, IN

as many guests as you like for an additional $20 each. A table for 8
can be reserved for just $160. Parking is free, but carpooling is
appreciated. You may tour the RVMH Hall of Fame after the meeting
for an additional $4 (that’s ½ the regular price of admission).
